Small firms 'need advice on employment law'

Small businesses in Britain should seek advice when it comes to understanding and implementing employment law, according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
Getting specific professional advice on all fields of employment legislation can save smaller companies money and time in the long run by ensuring that they are compliant with UK regulations.
Issues such as complex parental leave rights can particularly affect small firms and ensuring that companies operate within legal boundaries can reduce risk in the future.
According to a spokesperson for the FSB: "The one thing that we would really say to any business is to make sure that they get professional advice. If you're not doing what the law requires, ignorance is not a defence."
The spokesperson added that he believes that effective monitoring of shared parental leave rights is "way beyond" the capabilities of the average British small business and firms should seek advice when confronting complex legal issues.
Diversity issues, such as ethnicity, gender, religion, sexuality and age, have come to the fore in recent years and there is a raft of new legislation in place to prevent discrimination in the workplace.
