Musgrave denies worker exploitation accusatio

Irish-based Musgrave Group has hit out at claims made by a Polish newspaper that immigrant workers were being exploited in its warehouses.
According to Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza, Musgrave employees working in Dublin were discriminated against and mistreated by bosses, working for much lower wages and being forced to do more strenuous jobs than their Irish colleagues.
Both Irish and Polish workers joined together in a series of wildcat strikes at the Dublin site in April, accusing managers of discriminating against the 50 per cent of warehouse employees who were immigrants.
The Musgrave Group is the largest grocery distributor in Ireland and workers have been demanding pay and conditions at its Supervalu Centra Fonthill Dublin base since the spring, Personnel Today reports.
A report by the Irish Independent Workers' Union (IWU) recently claimed that there was evidence that Polish and other foreign workers had been treated unfairly by Musgrave.
Companies are increasingly coming under fire for exploiting workers who have entered Britain and other western European countries from eastern Europe following EU expansion.
