Publishers 'still failing on diversity'
It has been claimed that the publishing sector is still lagging behind other industries when it comes to diversity in the workplace.
According to a new report from the Diversity in Publishing Network, 92.3 per cent of employees in the UK publishing industry come from a white background.
While the study admits that this is close to the average make-up of the UK as a whole, it is far from representative of the publishing sector's main centre, London. The capital has a 28.8 per cent non-white population but the publishing industry does not reflect this in its make-up.
Of those black and minority ethnic staff who are employed by the publishing sector, a fifth are employed in IT and finance positions, while few are in editing.
However, the study did find that recent initiatives instigated in an effort to improve the number of black and ethnic minority people in the sector has had some impact.
