Funding to encourage black and minority ethni

The government has announced a total of £1.5 million in funding for new projects aimed at inspiring black and minority ethnic school students to get involved in science, technology, engineering and maths.
Unveiled by trade and industry secretary, Alistair Darling, the grants are worth up to £20,000 per school over the next two years
A total of 19 schools across the UK will benefit from the funding, which will fund projects such as shadowing scientists, researching renewable energy and learning about sustainable forestry.
The Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Access Grants were announced as part of National Science and Engineering Week following the first successful round of funding.
"It is vital for the UK's future that young people from all backgrounds are inspired by science, technology, engineering and maths," Mr Darling said. There are great careers here for young people to follow, and these grants can help unlock that interest. It can be good for them and good for the country."
A report by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), based on a two-year study, found that ethnic minority women are being excluded from the workforce in many areas and are often restricted to the type of job they can get, regardless of their level of qualification.
